This past Friday my hubby and I played hooky…ok, maybe it wasn’t hooky as our respective companies knew we were taking the day off, but…it was a day away…just for us…and every other person who attended the Iowa State Fair! We’ve been to the fair for several years starting as children and have managed to make it there a couple times as a couple, but it had been 2 years and the last time we were there, we had kids in tow, which completely changes the way you “view” a fair. So, we decided this year that it was going to be Date Day for us! We both enjoy fairs (both county & state) and have been to several, but as the theme of the Iowa State Fair suggests this year, “Nothing Compares”!
We started out morning out by driving down to Des Moines in the rain! Boo! But, we were determined to not let it dampen our spirits! Typically, we park on grounds for $10, but by the recommendation from Amy Hild of Modern Rural Living we decided to use the Dart system and park for MUCH cheaper. We decided on the Southeast Polk High School parking lot for a couple reasons…easy to get to without a lot of traffic and I knew exactly where we were going. We parked there and hopped on the bus for a total of $2! Yes, that was for both of us. Typically a round trip to the state fairgrounds is $2 but we had our advance tickets, so you get 50% off! That was a savings of $8 right there and it was so easy. No waiting in line, no walking forever. We jumped on the bus, took the ride into town (about 10 minutes) and were dropped off right at the gate.
There are so many things I could talk about where the fair is concerned and we definintely didn’t have enough time to do and see everything we wanted to (had to get back to the dogs that had been alone all day), but the highlights are below!
