The Things We Do…

As I type this I am sitting in a camper while it is raining outside. There is a pop up canopy over a fire while a brisket roasts in a cast iron pot. Sitting near the fire is T & M and Miss Nike. Is this my dream of how to spend Memorial Day weekend? Camping in the rain? Not so much! In fact, if wishes were fishes, I would be home on my couch watching a movie in my jammies!  But, we’ve got an11yo who LOVES for

One Hat, 2 Hats, Red Hat, Blue Hat

I know, a cheesy spin-off of Dr. Seuss, right? But, honestly…it describes my life right now. A few months back a friend of mine, Jen over at Just A Mom Giving It A Tri wrote about the different hats that she wears as a woman! Without even realizing it today, I started a Facebook post related to that topic and suddenly I decided it was much better as a blog post! (You can read about Jen & her hats HERE!)

So, how many hats do I wear?  Well, this week for example I am a City Clerk (my full-time big-girl job), wife, step-mom, daughter, daughter-in-law, Norwex consultant, social media expert, and Jamberry Nails consultant.  Whew, I’m exhausted!  So, why do I “do” all these things?  Well, to be honest, I’ve gained so many great skills and experiences, that I can’t help it!  Let’s look at these individually!

  1. City Clerk – I kind of fell into this job!  Ok, well, pushed really!  I was unhappy in my previous job, burned out really, and T basically forced (not really, but I like to tell people he did) me to apply!  So, here I am!  I love the job and the people that I’ve met while doing it.  The experiences and skills that I’ve gained.  But, the why?  Well, to be honest…I helping to raise 2 very active, fast growing boys…they are not cheap to feed!!!
  2. Wife – I do this because I found that person who complimented me!  He is calm when I’m not, he is strong when I am not, and we make a fantastic team!  I’ve also gained skills from being married: negotiating, compromising, patience, growth, etc.
  3. Step-Mom – oh boy…talk about learning!  I have learned that I can love someone who I did not give birth to, more than I love myself!  I’ve learned selflessness and patience, gratitude and strength!
  4. Direct Sales Consultant – I not only have developed my people skills even more so than before, but I’ve also developed a sense of worth by doing “extra” to provide for my family as well as gaining friendships that will last for a long time!  My communication has also been challenged and I’ve been forced to learn different ways to not only read people, but how to respond.

Obviously I’m a daughter, daughter-in-law, and the rest that I listed by default of the other hats that I wear, but it doesn’t mean that those hats haven’t taught me several lessons and have helped me to develop all the other skills that I listed previously.  While some days I’m so busy my own head spins and I feel like my list of “to do’s” is never ending, but I am grateful for the experiences and hats that have been brought into my life.

My True Feelings About Mother’s Day

Can I tell you a secret? I hate Mother’s Day! I love honoring my mom, which I feel that I do throughout the year and of course do my best to make her feel extra special on Mother’s Day, but being a step-mom on Mother’s Day is hard!  This is one of those real times that choosing the path I have is very difficult and the feelings are very raw!

R & M have a mom who is very present in their life and she is a good one!  I will NEVER try to take that away from her!  However, I’d by lying if I didn’t say that it hurts to not be recognized on Mother’s Day for the things that I do to help support and better the boys’ lives as well as love them unconditionally.  I don’t blame anyone for this, I’m not angry with them, T, or anyone else.  It just sucks and there is no good solution.  We try very hard to be very respectful of the boys’ mom and so we don’t make a big deal out of this type of thing (until now…whoops!)  In fact, while I was driving R to his moms this morning, I said to him, “you know Sunday is Mother’s Day…you need to make sure to make your mom a card or something!”  I encourage their relationship and focus on that she is their mother!  However, I will admit that every once in a while, it would be nice if someone recognized me for what I do for the boys.

What is Your Why?

I run. I’m a runner. I love to run! Why do I run? It’s because I want to be fit and healthy and because it releases the stress in my life! (Ok, it actually releases endorphins that override the stress in my life…at least for a short period of time, but either way it makes me feel better!) I am a wife.  I am married.  Why am I married?  Because I love my husband, love being part of a team, and love to feel wanted & needed.  I am a step-mom.  I am a parent.  Why do I have kids?  Well, that’s kind of a trick question considering they were a package deal with marrying T, but…had I not wanted to take on this role, I wouldn’t have even dated T.  I love the boys.  I love to help them grow, develop, and learn.  I love to take care of them!  I love to see them grow and become amazing young men!

All of these aspects in my life have their joys and their challenges.  Why do I do all of them?  Because I WANT to.  Because I GET something out of each one of them.  Recently I have had 2 different people tell me, “I need someone to train me to push me when it gets tough and to keep me motivated”.  While I appreciate their honesty, I disagree with this.  Motivation must come from within.  As a wellness instructor (yes, I teach fitness class too) I can tell you what moves to do to get you more physically fit.  But, I can’t motivate you!  Will showing you pictures of slender models motivate you?  Would me yelling at you motivate you?  Would me standing next to you saying, “you can do it” motivate you?  While our gut reaction might be to say “yes”, we all know deep down that this isn’t so!

In order to be successful at anything we all must know our “why”.  Why are we doing whatever we are doing?  Why do I want to succeed at whatever the task at hand is?  I’m a gadget runner!  This means I love my iPod (don’t run without it), always have a watch (lap counter & stop watch inside or GPS watch outside which gives me distance, calories burned, pace of run, etc).  The other day I forgot my iPod at home, which was charging over the weekend! GASP!  I know, right?  I actually contemplated NOT running because of it.  Then, I told myself that I could run one mile…I got through one mile of no music and told myself I could make it to 2 miles…then, I told myself that this really wasn’t as bad as I thought it was going to be and I made it to my 3.33 miles!  As I ran that last 1.33 miles, I thought about why I run.  Do I run because the music motivates me?  While I’ve always thought that (beat of the music to my running cadence), I realized this week that isn’t the case.  I run because I love it and because I love the way I feel when I’m done and how it makes my body feel on a regular basis.  THAT’s my why!  And each aspect of our life has a different why!


Are you struggling to find your why in life?  Be patient, focus on it and it will come to you!  If it doesn’t, then it’s not really important to you!  Each persons why and area of whys will be different and that’s ok!   Sometimes finding our why can be a struggle!  I’ve been “lost” in my life several times and trying to find my why.  It took me awhile and in different parts of my life the why has been different, but I’ve persevered and feel confident in my “whys” right now.  I guess that’s all part of Learning As I Go!

Dear 16 Year Old Katy…

Do you know one of the coolest things about having friends that are bloggers?  They make you think about things you really hadn’t thought about before.  That’s what Beth Ann of It’s Just Life did when she wrote a letter to her 16-year-old self!  So, after much thought and consideration…here’s my letter to myself at 16! 

Dear 16 Year Old Katy,

First, those braces that make your school pictures just horrible…don’t worry, they are coming off soon and it will be totally worth it because you will get endless compliments on your smile for years to come! Also, thank your mom and dad for their financial investment into your mouth (and remember how thankful you are when you’re the one investing in a mouth full of braces for a kid)! Those fangs you had weren’t very becoming on you and thankfully they recognized it!  The rest of that school picture that is awkward (the weird haircut, the acne, and glasses) those will all go away and you won’t feel so out-of-place!
