As I type this I am sitting in a camper while it is raining outside. There is a pop up canopy over a fire while a brisket roasts in a cast iron pot. Sitting near the fire is T & M and Miss Nike. Is this my dream of how to spend Memorial Day weekend? Camping in the rain? Not so much! In fact, if wishes were fishes, I would be home on my couch watching a movie in my jammies! But, we’ve got an11yo who LOVES for
camping, LIVES for this time of year and camping, so here we are…in the rain, smiling even though I’m so tired and want to go home!
It’s the beginning of a new month, March is over! Where did that time go? I remember when I was younger hearing the
“older” generation around me lament that “time just flies by and speeds up every year”! I couldn’t imagine what that felt like, but I do now! I swear (not literally) that every month is going faster and faster! But, I digress. During the month of March, I had declared that my Comments For A Cause was going to the Amy Hild Memorial Fund to remember my dear friend Amy of Modern Rural Living that was taken from us way too soon! I’m excited and sad all at the same time to say that because of your commenting efforts, I will be mailing her parents a check for $50.00. It is so bittersweet! I’m happy to continue to honor Amy’s memory this way and yet sad that I’m even having to do it in the first place! God continues to teach me patience in understanding.
3 days ago I lost someone new to my life, but she had managed to weave her way into my life on a level that I hadn’t quite understood until now and now there”s a big hole in my days and my life.
I can’t believe you’re gone. In fact, it doesn’t feel real except that I miss your Tweets, your Instagrams, and your Facebook posts. I miss the photos of Patches and Spenser and the view from your home. I miss a new selfie or seeing what you’ve been up to. I miss you “favoriting” a Tweet or Instagram that I post. I miss you commenting on my blog posts.
What did you do this past Saturday? Sat around in your sweats? Went shopping? Had coffee with your girlfriends? Not I…to any of those! Nope, I was up and at ’em on a cold, windy, damp Saturday morning to go “do construction” with my dad, brother, & T. “Do construction”, you say? Yup! In this situation we began the process to insulate and finish a portion of a machine shed to make it an office for our customer. This included lining the walls with insulating foam and cutting and installing perlins (the stringers that go from rafter to rafter) and studs to add more insulation and then finally we will install steel as the finishing touch (another day).
I was 10 when my dad started me working consturction jobs with him. He owns his own moonlighting construction company and we do projects here and there. When I was 10, my dad put me on a roof with him and started teaching me how to shingle! I know right? Shingling to start? He’s glad I stuck with him all these years. In the last 23 years I’ve learned how to construct buildings, hang steel, replace windows, remodel kitchens & bathrooms, finish wood projects (we made a bed one winter for me out of repurposed barn wood), shingle, and frame out buildings. I can use a circular saw, drill gun, and air nailer.
